Pro Arte Musical presents violinist Philippe Quint in the show, Charlie Chaplin's Smile, a concert celebrating the musical legacy of the renowned filmmaker, comedian and composer, on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 7:30 p.m., at the Teatro de the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras.
Charles Spencer Chaplin's films, created in the early 20th century, addressed pressing political and social issues such as poverty, unemployment, inequality and immigration, which still resonate deeply in society today. Quint, working with arrangers Charles Coleman and Leon Gurvitch, reviewed dozens of compositions and scores written by Chaplin to select those most suitable for violin and piano.
Praised for his poetic lyricism and passion, Philippe Quint is one of America's leading violinists, with multiple Grammy Award nominations for several of his recordings. “Quint captivates audiences with his style, his innovative interpretations of classical repertoire and his advocacy of contemporary music. In addition to being a violin virtuoso, he spent his childhood watching Charlie Chaplin's films until he became an expert, and today, he strives to make Chaplin's work known as a composer - who, in addition to being an actor and director - also wrote the music for many of his films,” says Karen Schneck-Malaret, executive director of Pro Arte Musical.“
Charlie Chaplin’s Smile with Philippe Quint will be a multimedia show that will transport audiences to the most exciting moments in Chaplin’s life, punctuated with masterpieces by Debussy, Gershwin, Stravinsky and Brahms, whose compositions inspired the beginnings of sound cinema. For us at Pro Arte Musical it is a dream to bring Philippe Quint in this special presentation that has traveled the world, now premiering in Puerto Rico,” adds Schneck.
Philippe Quint was born on March 26, 1974 in Leningrad, Russia. He studied at the Moscow Special School of Music for the Gifted - with the Russian violinist Andrei Korsakov - and made his orchestral debut at the young age of nine. After immigrating to the United States in 1991, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Juilliard School, graduating in 1998. Quint has performed with world-class orchestras such as: London Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Quint plays Antonio Stradivari's 1708 “Ruby” violin, generously donated by The Stradivari Society®. He currently lives in New York and is a US citizen.
“What sets Chaplin apart from many other great comedians, actors and directors of his era is his incredible ability to remain relevant, no matter how much time has passed,” Quint says.
When describing Chaplin's musical style, Quint compares it to that of Mozart... “in its grace and charm, which speaks directly to the heart. Discovering Chaplin's music was both a blessing and perhaps the greatest challenge I have ever faced musically; "a wanderer, a gentleman, a poet, a dreamer, 'a lonely guy', as he described himself, were all very easy to detect in his musical texts and my mission, then, was to preserve the simplicity of his moving melodies." Quint explains. To purchase tickets for the Charlie Chaplin’s Smile concert with Philippe Quint, access the Ticketera virtual box office.
