When: June 1, 2024 / 10:30AM
Meeting point: Utopia, PonceDuration: 2.5 – 3 hours
Ponce is a city with incredible, eclectic architecture with stories and elements unique to Puerto Rico. In honor of these stories, architecture, and the characters and historical events behind each one, this walking tour through the urban area of Ponce was born. This tour focuses on the lives of six architects who left a great legacy in Ponce, the events that were happening when they did their works, and the great works that decorate the Stately City today.
The architects we will be highlighting are: Juan Bertoli, Blas Silva, Manuel Domenech, Alfredo Wiechers, Francisco Porrata-Doria, and Pedro Méndez Mercado. It is not a tour about the architecture of structures in their entirety, the focus is more on the lives of these characters, the historical events that led to the architectural legacy that we have today in Ponce, and some details that stand out about the architectural styles of these structures.
Although we will talk and visit dozens of structures throughout the historic center of La Perla del Sur, we only enter some. It is important to come with comfortable clothing and shoes for walking. We highly recommend using a hat, sunscreen, and bringing water to drink, and an umbrella for sun or rain.
*The tour also takes place if it rains
